How do you define success? According to Merriam-Webster, success is “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame.” However, Strayer University recently released findings from its national “Success Project Survey,” which was conducted to determine what success means to Americans today. 90% believe that success is more about happiness than power, possessions, or prestige.

So whether we define success by achieving wealth, respect, and fame, or happiness, it can be difficult to understand what Jesus meant when he makes the statement in this morning’s passage: “Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”
