In The Belly Of Sheol

Last week we left Jonah as he was thrown overboard by the crew because of God’s judgment on Jonah’s disobedience. As someone originally reading this story from Israel, you would expect the story of Jonah to end at chapter 1 verse 15 – “So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped raging and Jonah was killed by the sea…the end”. As a prophet of God in open disobedience to God’s command you would expect nothing less than what you deserved: Death.
Then we read Chapter 1 verse 17 – “And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah…”
