This morning’s passage is found in John 12: 44-50, the final public teaching of Jesus before his death. This section should seem familiar to you because the wording is almost identical to John 3:16-21. John intentionally meant for these passages to be very similar when he wrote them, using a literary device called an “inclusio”, or a literary “bookend”, marking the beginning and end of Jesus’ teaching ministry in John 3 and then John 12. The thrust of Christ’s last teaching was to remind everyone why He came to earth in the first place, and the fact that He was sent and taught under the authority of His Father in heaven.
